MISAFF19 STAR HAMZA HAQ
We are delighted to announce the talented Canadian actor Hamza Haq as our MISAFF19 Star presented by ACTRA TORONTO.
Hamza Haq will star as Bashir “Bash” Hamed in the new CTV medical drama Transplant. The series centres around an ER doctor who fled his native Syria to come to Canada where he must overcome numerous obstacles to resume a career in the high stakes world of emergency medicine.
Hamza has previously starred as Gopal / Amal Chandekar in the CTV mini-series Indian Detective opposite Russell Peters, Anupam Kher and William Shatner, and earned critical acclaim as Raza Ali in the CBC drama This Life, for which he earned a 2018 Canadian Screen Award Nomination for Best Guest Performance. Other notable credits include recurring roles on the Cinemax series Jett starring Carla Gugino, Quantico starring Priyanka Chopra, and The Art of More with Denis Quaid and Kate Bosworth. He has also appeared in Designated Survivor, The Bold Type, Being Human, Michael: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Best Laid Plans, and as the host of the TVOKids program Look Kool. On the big screen Hamza holds supporting roles in Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 with Colm Feore, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan directed by Xavier Dolan, Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!, Run this Town opposite Mena Massoud and Nina Dobrev, and the upcoming My Salinger Year starring Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver.
In 2017, he was named one of Canada’s Rising Stars in The Hollywood Reporter.
Most recently, Hamza co-starred on the CBC Gem crime-drama miniseries The 410 as Jassie, a Brampton police officer grappling with the complicated relationship he shares with his ex-girlfriend and neighbour, Suri. The show is written and stars Supinder Wraich, and is directed by Renuka Jayapalan.
Raised in Ottawa, Hamza is youngest of four siblings born in Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents and has called Canada home for almost twenty years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies with a minor in Law from Carleton University. He is represented by ART and continues his professional training as an actor with LS&Co Studios.
